Calpico

Also known as Calpis in Japan, Calpico is a refreshing nonalcoholic drink made from fermented milk. It has a lightly sweet, tangy, yogurt-like flavor and comes in a variety of fruity options.

Also known as Calpis in Japan, Calpico is a nonalcoholic drink that you’ll often see in the soft drink aisle of Asian grocery stores (like us!)

It usually comes in a clear bottle — although there is also concentrated Calpico to which water or milk is added — and is uncarbonated, with a milky, soft opaque appearance and a flavor that’s simultaneously a bit creamy and tangy. Some say the taste is similar to a refreshing yogurt, which makes sense since they’re both fermented milk products.

Calpico also comes in other flavors like strawberry, lychee, peach, melon, and more. With its combination of lightly creamy, a bit sweet, tangy, and refreshing, it’s not just popular in Japan, but worldwide.

There are similar drinks in Japan and other parts of East Asia, for example Bikkle, or the probiotic Yakult that has its own special place in Japanese culture.

You’ll find Calpico at Uwajimaya along with many others!
