Coconut Water

Not to be confused with coconut milk, which is extracted from the flesh, coconut water is the clear liquid found inside young green coconut fruits. It’s essentially coconut juice!

This juice is slightly opaque with a clear white tint and a light nutty, mineral flavor. It’s popular as a drink by itself or can be mixed into others, including cocktails. In young coconuts, it’s sometimes drunk straight from the coconut with a straw.

One thing that makes coconut water popular is that it has many electrolytes and other vitamins and minerals without having a high sugar content — in World War II it was even used as plasma in emergencies, although we can’t exactly recommend doing that now.

Along with the main electrolytes (sodium, magnesium, potassium, and calcium), they also contain noteworthy amounts of manganese, iron, vitamin C, and B vitamins, among other nutrients.

You can find fresh young coconuts for their coconut water in Uwajimaya’s produce section, as well as canned coconut water in our beverage aisle.
