Banana Ketchup is a popular Filipino condiment made from bananas, sugar, vinegar and spices.
Banana ketchup contains less vinegar and is sweeter than tomato ketchup. It’s often served with fried foods and is the main ingredient in Filipino Spaghetti.
Most say that banana ketchup was created during World War II, when Americans brought tomato ketchup to the Philippines. Since tomatoes were hard to find at that time, bananas were used as a substitute.
A form of banana sauce most likely existed prior to World War II, and was later adapted to look similar to tomato ketchup.
