Donabe

A special Japanese clay pot for cooking hot pot dishes

Donabe are pots made out of a special clay used in the cooking of Japanese hot pot dishes such as shabu shabu. The donabe can last for several years if properly cared for. Before using a brand new donabe, boil water in the donabe, let water cool and then wipe dry.  Always make sure the outside of the donabe is dry before putting it over heat.  Be sure to heat the donabe gradually as it may crack if heated too fast and never heat the donabe while empty.
