Rambutan

Native to Southeast Asia, rambutan is a tropical fruit now grown in many regions throughout the tropics.

Closely related to lychee, rambutan has a similar appearance with its firm red shell — but it’s easy to tell apart thanks to the long, soft, hair-like spines that give it a wild, whimsical look.

Not only does rambutan look related to lychee, but it tastes and feels quite similar too; the flesh is similarly pale — sometimes with a light pink tinge — with that same signature, satisfyingly soft texture and sweetness surrounding a hardy pit. To peel, simply score the outer shell with a paring knife, then pop it open with your thumbs.

Thanks to their sweetness and texture, rambutans are typically enjoyed on their own or used in desserts, jellies, and sweet drinks. Occasionally, they’re also added to savory or spicy dishes to provide a bright, contrasting note.

Nutritionally, rambutan is a good source of potassium and, like many fruits, is especially high in vitamin C. You can find it at Uwajimaya stores in our produce department.
