Uwajimaya Debuts Kai Market in Seattle’s Vibrant South Lake Union Neighborhood

SEATTLE, WA – (May 3, 2017) – The first Kai Market, a new urban market concept from local Asian supermarket retailer Uwajimaya, celebrates its grand opening on May 3, 2017.
“We are extremely excited to unveil Kai Market which takes Uwajimaya’s trusted history and commitment to quality and authentic Asian flavors, and presents them in a modern, innovative and convenient way for today’s urban shopper,” said Denise Moriguchi, CEO of Uwajimaya Inc. “We see the two formats as complementing each other and look forward to growing both as we move forward.”
The new 5,500 square foot store features an impressive array of seafood including live shellfish tanks and a poke bar, a variety of grab-n-go meals, snacks and beverages, a thoughtful selection of sake, beer and wine, and a well-curated offering of Asian grocery and gift items.
“Giving Kai Market its own brand identity was both a challenge and necessity given its departure from our typical Uwajimaya supermarkets. We worked closely with our design and construction teams, Graham Baba Architects, Turnstyle and Skanska, to craft Kai Market as a showcase for our colorful products. The experience is one of a kind,” said Miye Moriguchi, Development Manager of Uwajimaya Inc.
Skanska developed and built 400 Fairview in 2015, a 13-story office tower with over 17,000 square feet of ground-floor retail dubbed The Hall. Kai Market joins current and new Hall retailers: Caffe Ladro, Meat & Bread, Juicy Café, Bar Harbor, florist Verde & Co., Urban Optix, Butter LONDON, JOIN collective and Trophy Cupcakes.
“Our mission continues to create the center of local retail in South Lake Union with The Hall,” said Murphy McCullough, executive vice president for Skanska. “Kai Market perfectly embodies our shared vision for retail at 400 Fairview – a valued local Seattle institution, with loyal customers, and an inspired retail concept. We are proud to welcome them to the building and know that tenants, the community, and passersby will love this new experience from Uwajimaya.”
Kai Market will celebrate its public grand opening on May 3, 2017. Hours will be Monday through Friday 10am-8pm, Saturday 10am-5pm, closed Sundays. For additional information, please visit kaimkt.com.
