Five-Spice Pot Roast

Ingredients:

1 (3-4 lb.) Boneless bottom round beef roast
Salt and pepper
1 to 2 Tbsp. Peanut or vegetable oil
1/4 cup Soy Sauce
1/4 cup Mirin Sweet Cooking Wine or sake 
1/4 cup Water
1 Tbsp. Chinese 5 Spice Powder

Preparation:

Makes 4 to 6 servings

Trim fat from meat. Season with salt and pepper. Heat oil over medium-high heat in large covered pan, such as a Dutch oven. Brown meat on all sides. Reduce heat to medium-low.
Add soy sauce, wine, water and five spice powder. Cover and simmer 1 to 1-1/4 hours. Turn meat over and cook on other side for an additional 1 to 1-1/2 hours.

 

Remove meat from pan and place on carving board or serving platter; cover with aluminum foil and let rest 15 to 20 minutes. Cut into thin slices and serve with pan juices.
